The Weekly Stuff Podcast #432 – 10 FOR 10: The Weekly Stuff Podcast 10th Anniversary Spectacular!

It’s time for the very special 10th anniversary episode of The Weekly Stuff Podcast with Jonathan Lack & Sean Chapman, a weekly audio show that explores the worlds of film, television, and video games. You can subscribe for free in Apple Podcasts or wherever you get your podcasts.

10 years ago today, on June 13th, 2012, we launched The Weekly Stuff Podcast (then called WGTC Radio) – and today, 10 years and 432 episodes later, we’re bringing you the biggest episode we’ve ever done to celebrate. In this massive 10-hour podcast spectacular, we’ve recorded 10 topics for 10 years, each revisiting one of our many recurring subjects – like Doctor Who, Persona, Lord of the Rings, and Gundam – by reviewing or discussing something in that area we haven’t talked about before. So you’ll hear us discuss things like “The Three Doctors,” the Doctor Who serial from 1973 that marked that show’s 10th anniversary with its first-ever multi-Doctor story, or “Persona 3: The Weird Masquerade,” the extremely bizarre and weirdly compelling stage musical based on one of our all-time favorite video games. And there’s a lot more – this podcast is full of surprises, and while we’ve listed the topic areas in the time chart below, we haven’t listed exactly what we’re discussing, just in case you’d like to go in unspoiled.

Thank you all so much for being along for the ride, whether you’ve recently discovered our podcast or have been here for all 10 years. And as always…Enjoy!

PERSONA 5 ROYAL – The Complete Weekly Stuff Spoiler-Cast Discussions

It’s time for a very special bonus episode of The Weekly Stuff Podcast with Jonathan Lack & Sean Chapman, a weekly audio show that explores the worlds of film, television, and video games. You can subscribe for free in Apple Podcasts or wherever you get your podcasts.

In 2017, we discussed Atlus’ landmark JRPG Persona 5 so exhaustively that we collected all our conversations into a single 10-hour super-podcast that become our most listened-to episode ever. Since Persona 5 Royal – the updated, reworked version of the game – released in 2020, we’ve gotten countless requests to update our magnum opus, and after recording another 4 hours of discussion on The Royal, we’ve done just that! This 14.5-hour mega-podcast contains all of our original Persona 5 discussions – re-edited and remastered from the original audio files – plus 4 additional hours of discussion on Persona 5 Royal, all edited into a new epic-length spoiler-cast that delves into every possible facet of this masterpiece in excruciating detail!

This podcast consists of eight parts. In Part 1, Sean and Jonathan introduce Persona 5 Royal, talk about exactly what this episode and project is, and also discuss at length something we never got to talk about the first time around, which is the brilliant Japanese vocal cast of the game. Then in Part 2, we’ll be jumping back in time to 2017 for our original series of podcast discussions on Persona 5, with each segment from Parts 2 through 5 discussing two palaces or story arcs apiece, as we dive deep in discussing every facet of the story and gameplay along the way. In Part 6, we give what were in 2017 our final wrap-up thoughts on the originally released version of Persona 5, and then in Part 7, we jump over to The Royal, and discuss all the changes to gameplay mechanics this version introduces. And finally in Part 8, we go deep with the new story material and characters of Persona 5 Royal, and fully reflect on this new, definitive version of this masterpiece of a game.

And it's all so long that if you're watching/listening on YouTube, they've made us split it into two parts! Part 1 is at the top of this page - here's Part 2:

We are truly proud and excited to share this behemoth of an episode – you won’t find a more exhaustive spoiler-cast discussion of Persona 5 Royal anywhere else on the internet. Enjoy.

The Weekly Stuff Podcast #415 – The PERSONA 5 ROYAL Episode

It’s time for a very special BONUS episode of The Weekly Stuff Podcast with Jonathan Lack & Sean Chapman, a weekly audio show that explores the worlds of film, television, and video games. You can subscribe for free in Apple Podcasts or wherever you get your podcasts.

Nearly five years ago now, Atlus’ Persona 5 released in the United States and took our hearts, compelling us to record several weeks’ worth of spoiler-cast discussions on the game that we later compiled into a 10.5-hour mega-podcast that quickly became our most popular episode ever! Since Persona 5 Royal – the updated, reworked version of the game – released in 2020, we’ve gotten countless requests for a Royal-specific follow-up episode. And now that we’ve both finally had time to sit down and play all 120+ hours of this absolute behemoth of a game, we’re back with just that: A solid 4-hour review and discussion of Persona 5 Royal, breaking down everything new – including the tremendous new extra arc, reworked ending, and new and reworked characters like Yoshizawa, Maruki, and Akechi – and reveling in what very well might be the greatest video game ever made. It’s been too long since we devoted an entire episode to Persona, but we hope we’ve made up for the wait with this extra-long bonus episode!

Enjoy!

The Weekly Stuff #245 – Ant-Man & The Wasp Review, Persona Dancing Talk, and Remembering Steve Ditko & Harlan Ellison

It’s time for another episode of The Weekly Stuff Podcast with Jonathan Lack & Sean Chapman, a weekly audio show that explores the worlds of film, television, and video games. You can subscribe for free in iTunes by following this link

Marvel’s third film of the year arrived this week with Ant-Man & The Wasp,an imperfect and slight film that is nevertheless an absurd amount of fun. We give it our traditional in-depth treatment, but before that, Sean pays homage to two recently deceased creative giants who have had a big influence on him – Spider-Man creator and renowned comics artist Steve Ditko, and science-fiction giant Harlan Ellison – and Jonathan’s brother Thomas joins us for another discussion about Persona 3 Dancing and Persona 5 Dancing, as he’s gone and nabbed all the high scores in those games to go along with his obsessive high scores from Persona 4 Dancing.

Oh, and during the Persona talk, Sean also expressed his desire to see the game’s remix of “Burn My Dread” laid over footage of classic-style Sonic the Hedgehog, and I obliged on the fly. It works amazingly well.

Enjoy!

The Weekly Stuff Podcast #238 – Pre-E3 2018 Predictions and Reviewing Persona 3 & 5 Dancing Games

It’s time for another episode of The Weekly Stuff Podcast with Jonathan Lack & Sean Chapman, a weekly audio show that explores the worlds of film, television, and video games. You can subscribe for free in iTunes by following this link

With E3 2018 just around the corner, we check in on what we’re expecting from all the major players – Microsoft, Sony, Nintendo, EA, Ubisoft, and Bethesda – before next week’s big show. This has been one of the leakiest E3’s ever, but there’s a lot left to speculate about in what seems like it’s going to be an eventful convention. We also review the new Persona Dancing games from Japan – Persona 3 Dancing Moon Nightand Persona 5 Dancing Star Night – in greater depth, gushing over all the best songs, dances, costumes, and more, and Jonathan tries to explain some very bad Yu-Gi-Oh filler in a segment that quickly goes off the rails.

Enjoy!

The Weekly Stuff Podcast #232 – Persona 5 The Animation, Isao Takahata, and Ranking Spider-Man Games

It’s time for another episode of The Weekly Stuff Podcast with Jonathan Lack & Sean Chapman, a weekly audio show that explores the worlds of film, television, and video games. You can subscribe for free in iTunes by following this link

We have quite the grab bag for you on the show this week, as we discuss topics as wide-ranging as the passing of beloved Japanese director Isao Takahata, a true pioneer of the medium, to something as silly as Sean ranking all the Spider-Mangames he has ever played to celebrate the release date announcement of Insomniac’s Spider-Man PS4 game. Jonathan also talks about his adventures re-watching Yu-Gi-Oh! in Japanese, Sean gives final thoughts on Far Cry 5, and we talk about the first two episodes of Persona 5 The Animation. We even bring Jonathan’s brother Thomas on to talk about Persona 4 Dancing All Night and the upcoming Persona 3 and dancing spin-offs, given that Thomas is currently #1 in the leaderboards on most P4D songs.

And on a personal note, I (Jonathan) have some big life news to share on the podcast this week. I talk about it more on the show, but in short, I have been accepted to a PhD program in Film Studies at the University of Iowa, and will be moving later this year to attend. No, it does not mean the end of the podcast, though we’ll probably have to do some experimenting to make the transition from ‘two guys in a room with one mic’ to ‘two guys in two different states over the internet.’ Neither Sean nor I are all that worried – plenty of podcasts record this way! – but it will be a bit of a change, and if you’ve got any tips, we’d be happy to hear them!

Enjoy!

Time Chart:

Intro: 0:00:00 – 0:09:10

The Weekly Stuff BONUS Podcast - The Complete Persona 5 Spoiler-Casts

It’s time for a special bonus episode of The Weekly Stuff Podcast with Jonathan Lack & Sean Chapman, a weekly audio show that explores the worlds of film, television, and video games. You can subscribe for free in iTunes by following this link.

If you’ve been listening to The Weekly Stuff Podcast for any length of time, you know that one of our favorite things to discuss is the Japanese RPG series Persona. So throughout the month of April, once Persona 5 was released in the US, we did big spoiler-chats on the podcast every week as we progressed through the game – talking about all the characters, story points, gameplay systems, and much more. We thought it would be fun for posterity’s sake to collect all these spoiler chats into one giant episode, either to make it easier for listeners to revisit in the future, or for those who haven’t played the game yet but might want to listen to our conversations one day. Plus, we thought it would be funny to release a giant 10-hour podcast and surprise everyone. In any case, we hope Persona fans find this fun and interesting and useful. Please refer to the time chart in the show notes to know where different parts of the discussion start and end. Each of the first four parts covers two Palaces or Story Arcs, and the final part gives some more general thoughts on the Confidants and the game’s story and themes in general.

So without further ado…enjoy!

Time Chart:

Intro: 00:00:00 – 00:01:41
Part 1 (Palaces 1 and 2): 00:01:41 – 02:51:39
Part 2 (Palaces 3 and 4): 02:51:39 – 04:11:51
Part 3 (Palaces 5 and 6): 04:11:51 – 06:21:36
Part 4 (Palaces 7 and 8 and ending): 06:21:36 – 08:32:03
Part 5 (Overall Thoughts): 08:32:03 – 10:26:43

The Weekly Stuff Podcast #187 – Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2 Review, Doctor Who S10E4 & Persona 5 Wrap-Up

It’s time for another episode of The Weekly Stuff Podcast with Jonathan Lack & Sean Chapman, a weekly audio show that explores the worlds of film, television, and video games. You can subscribe for free in iTunes by following this link.

In what might be our longest episode ever, we offer three big spoiler chats. First up is Guardains of the Galaxy Vol. 2, the latest film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and one of their best, most entertaining sequels to date. Next is this week’s episode of Doctor Who, “Knock Knock,” in which the show tries on a genuine horror setting and produces perhaps the best episode of the season so far (and prompts Sean to make a lot of Knock Knock joke puns). And finally, it’s time for one last (for now) Persona 5 discussion, as we move past our story spoiler-chats to offer an overview of the game as a whole, putting at least a temporary cap on our thoughts about this wonderful game.

Enjoy!

Intro: 0:00:00 – 0:07:32
